Meditation Labyrinth

Modeled after the labyrinth in the Chartres Cathedral, one simply follows the path to the center and then walks the same path back out. There are no branches or forks. By placing one foot in front of the next, you are guided on a refreshingly circuitous path to the middle. It is commonly used as a mindfulness meditation tool to support coming present, letting go, and unwinding.

This is the second labyrinth I built on this scale (approximately 40’ in diameter). With this particular one, I volunteered my time, fundraised to cover material costs, prepped the base (the majority of the work!), sprayed the pattern, and chose the materials and rock mosaic design in order to lead a group of volunteers with no rock laying experience to place the stones. We laid all the labyrinth mosaic stones in a single day, and what a special, beautiful day it was!

After that initial build, I came back later and installed (with some hired labor) a flagstone pathway to wrap the labyrinth, a french drain to mitigate water runoff, benches, a rock wall for some elevation variation, and a gazebo.
